Must try foods in Singapore!
Singapore, a melting pot of cultures, is renowned for its vibrant culinary scene. The city-state offers a mix of flavors, making it a paradise for food enthusiasts. You can find pretty much anything your heart desires, and there is so much food from all over the world completely packed in the small state.
Here are some must try foods in Singapore that we think you just have to put on your list when visiting beautiful Singapore.
1. Hainanese Chicken Rice
Where to Try: Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice at Maxwell Food Centre.
Hainanese Chicken Rice is often considered Singapore’s national dish. This simple yet flavorful dish consists of poached chicken served with fragrant rice cooked in chicken broth. Accompanied by a trio of dipping sauces – chili, ginger, and dark soy – and a bowl of clear chicken soup, it’s a comforting meal that’s beloved by locals and tourists alike.
Tian Tian, famed by the late Anthony Bourdain, is the go-to spot for hawker Chicken Rice.
2. Chili Crab
Where to Try: Jumbo Seafood at East Coast Seafood Centre and Long Beach Seafood Restaurant at Dempsey
Chili Crab is a quintessential Singaporean seafood dish. The crab is stir-fried in a sweet and savory tomato and chili-based sauce, creating a rich and tangy flavor that’s perfectly mopped up a steamed bun. The dish is not overly spicy, and can therefore be enjoyed by most.
3. Laksa
Laksa is a spicy noodle soup with Peranakan origins, combining Chinese and Malay flavors. The most popular variant in Singapore is Katong Laksa, which features thick rice noodles in a coconut milk-based curry soup, topped with prawns, cockles, and fish cakes. The broth’s creamy and spicy nature makes it a satisfying dish, perfect for any time of the day.
Laksa can be found at pretty much any place, so you can get away with just paying around 6-8 Dollars at a hawker center, but also more pricey restaurants serve the wonderful soup.
4. Satay
Nasi lemak is a dish originating in Malay cuisine that consists of fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf. Most places serve with a side of egg, fried peanut and anchovy mixed, sambal and fresh cucumbers.
5. Kaya Toast
Kaya Toast is a traditional Singaporean breakfast item that consists of toasted bread spread with kaya (a sweet coconut and egg jam, similar to custard) and a slab of butter.
It’s typically served with soft-boiled eggs and a cup of kopi (local coffee). The combination of sweet, salty, and creamy flavors makes it a delightful way to start the day.
Where to Try: Ya Kun Kaya Toast with outlets islandwide
6. Nasi Lemak
Satay is a popular street food consisting of skewered and grilled meat, usually chicken, beef, or mutton. Served with a peanut dipping sauce, rice cakes, and a side of cucumber and onions, it’s a flavorful snack that’s perfect for sharing.
And if you ask us, we would say it’s the perfect evening snack together with a beer or 2!
